Outreach – Adlai E. Stevenson High School 

Residency – Adlai E. Stevenson High School, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire, IL, December 17th, 2014

On December 17th 2014, New Comma Baroque’s Sarah Huebsch & Phillip Serna continued our partnership with Adlai E. Stevenson High School’s Baroque Ensemble and Viol Consort with performances on Baroque oboe, recorder & viol for wind, brass and percussion students in the band program there.

Residency – Adlai E. Stevenson High School, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire, IL, August 27th, 2014

On August 27th 2014, New Comma Baroque continued its partnership with Adlai E. Stevenson High School’s Baroque Ensemble and Viol Consort with performances by Baroque violinist Matthew Cataldi, harpsichordist Emily Katayama, gambist Phillip Serna, guest lutanist Joel Spears and Wayward Sisters‘ cellist and gambist Anna Steinhoff. Repertoire included music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, Bartoloméo da Selma y Salaverde, Orlando Gibbons, Tobias Hume, Jean-Marie Leclair, Johannes Heironymus Kapsberger, Johannes Schenck & Georg Philipp Telemann. The daylong residency of lecture performances for orchestra and guitar classes culminated in an after-school workshop where students had the chance to try period instruments including Baroque violins, violas, celli, viols and theorbo.

Clinic – The Midwest Clinic, McCormick Place, 2301 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL, December 20th, 2013

Dr. Phillip W. Serna joined director Enrique Vilaseco and the Adlai E. Stevenson High School Period-Instrument Baroque Ensemble for a clinic December 20th, 2013 at the 67th Annual Midwest Clinic: An International Band and Orchestra Conference at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL . The clinic, “The Making of H.I.P. (Historically-Informed Performance) Performers for the 21st Century,” highlighted Stevenson High School’s unique group of historically-informed performers featuring soloist and ensemble performances on Baroque strings and keyboards, demonstrating how performance practice can be taught at the high school level. Concert – Adlai E. Stevenson High School, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire, IL, May 16th, 2013

On May 16th, Baroque flutist Leighann Daihl & Phillip W. Serna joined  the Adlai E. Stevenson High School Period-Instrument Baroque Ensemble for a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 5th & 6th Brandenburg Concerti after a spring filled with many coaching sessions with Dr Serna, continuing New Comma Baroque’s fruitful partnership with Adlai E. Stevenson High School.

Clinic & Concert – IL Music Educators’ Association Convention – Peoria Civic Center, IL, January 25th, 2013

On January 25th, Dr. Phillip W. Serna joined orchestra director Enrique Vilaseco and the Adlai E. Stevenson High School Period-Instrument Baroque Ensemble for a clinic and performance at the 2013 Illinois Music Educators Association Conference ‘Music in the Key of Change’ at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, IL. The morning clinic highlighted Stevenson High School’s unique group of historically-informed performers featuring soloist and ensemble performances on Baroque strings and keyboards, demonstrating how performance practice can be taught at the high school level. Later in the afternoon, Phillip Serna joined the ensemble in a program of J.S. Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi and a Concert Suite by Georg Philipp Telemann for Viola da Gamba, Strings & Continuo. September 2012 featured a partnership between Stevenson High School and New Comma Baroque, a period-instrument ensemble with Baroque violinist Matthew Cataldi, harpsichordist Emily Katayama, gambist Phillip Serna and guest lutanist Joel Spears. New Comma Baroque held a daylong residency of lecture performances for orchestra and guitar classes, culminating in a community concert of French Baroque music.

Outreach – Neuqua Valley High School

Residency – Neuqua Valley High School, 2360 95th Street, Naperville, IL, May 20th, 2013

On May 20, 2013, performed a day-long residency at Neuqua Valley High School by New Comma Baroque, a period-instrument ensemble with harpsichordist Emily Katayama, gambist Phillip Serna and guest recorder performer Laura Osterlund featuring lecture performances for the Neuqua Valley orchestra classes.

New Comma Baroque is a program of the Renovo Music Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization partially supported by a grant from the Evanston Arts Council, a city agency supported by the City of Evanston, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. All donations to New Comma Baroque are tax-deductible.
